The aim of the Learn-To-Row program is to give those new to the sport a trial period, with intensive coaching, so they can decide if it is a sport they will enjoy long term.
The Atlanta Rowing Club offers three LTR courses in April, June and August-September. Each course is four weeks long and meets three times per week for a total of twelve practice sessions. Each practice meeting is two hours long and is held at the ARC boathouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Each class is limited to 16 participants to maximize close individual coaching and time on the water.
The course focusses on rowing technique and does not consist of hard workouts. However, there are some physical requirements for class admission. Participants must be competent swimmers, able to tread water and feel comfortable in and on the water. Since participants will have to lift the boats to carry on their shoulders, they should be comfortable lifting about 30 pounds overhead. Due to the weight restrictions in the boat designs, participant's weight is limited to about 230 pounds.
Participants must be at least 18 years of age. If you are under age 18, you should contact two very good school age programs - the Atlanta Junior Rowing Association or Saint Andrew Rowing Club.
The classes comprise technical and safety training on land (using the infamous 'erg' rowing machine...) as well as lots of water time in small (singles and doubles) and large (eights) boats, including an eight-person rowing barge that allows beginners to row on the river in a stable environment. Both the sweep rowing stroke (rowing with one oar) and the sculling technique (rowing with two oars) will be taught. The classes are conducted by experienced rowers of the ARC.
The cost of the program is $250. Payment is due with your completed application. The fee may be refunded up to two weeks before start of your session.
If nothing else, you'll enjoy four weeks on the scenic Chattahoochee river while learning a new activity and making new friends. Those who complete the Learn-To-Row program are invited to apply for membership in the Atlanta Rowing Club for the remainder of the calendar year. Please see the 'join us' section of our web site for further information on our membership dues and volunteering obligations.

To ensure individual attention, each session is limited to 16 participants, so early sign-up is strongly encouraged. Priority for a class is determined by the postmark date of your application/waiver and fees. There is no "enrollment period" - applications can be sent at any time. Once your application and payment are received, you will receive confirmation of your class assignment and other pertinent information. Every effort will be made to honor your desired class, on a first come, first serve basis.
