The Program The aim of the Learn-To-Row program is to give those new to the sport a trial period, with intensive coaching, so they can decide if it is a sport they will enjoy long term.
The Atlanta Rowing Club offers three LTR courses in April, June and August-September. Each course is four weeks long and meets three times per week for a total of twelve practice sessions. Each practice meeting is two hours long and is held at the ARC boathouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Each class is limited to 16 participants to maximize close individual coaching and time on the water. There are no special requirements for class admission except that students must be at least 18 years of age, be able to tread water, swim and feel comfortable on the water.
(If you are under age 18, please contact the Atlanta Junior Rowing Association or Saint Andrew Rowing Club).
The classes comprise technical and safety training on land (using the infamous 'erg' rowing machine...) as well as lots of water time in small (singles and doubles) and large (eights) boats, including an eight-person rowing barge that allows beginners to row on the river in a stable environment. Both the sweep rowing stroke (rowing with one oar) and the sculling technique (rowing with two oars) will be taught. The classes are conducted by experienced rowers of the ARC.
Fees The cost of the program is $250. Payment is due with your completed application. The fee may be refunded up to two weeks before start of your session.
Benefits If nothing else, you'll enjoy four weeks on the scenic Chattahoochee river while learning a new activity and making new friends. Those who complete the Learn-To-Row program are invited to apply for membership in the Atlanta Rowing Club for the remainder of the calendar year. Please see the 'join us' section of our web site for further information on our membership dues and volunteering obligations.
