There are two types of four-man rowing shells: quads and fours. When four rowers each carry two oars, we call it a 4x (quad). On the other hand, four rowers each with one oar in a boat steered by a coxswain is called 4+ (four-plus); while a four without a coxswain is called a 4- (four-minus).
